The Situation: An Inability to Login as a Local Administrator on Their Windows 7 Pro Computer
After unintentionally changing their domain, the client’s computer wasn’t allowing them to login to their account as a local administrator. Instead, they were only able to login as a guest – and a local administrator has to be logged in to change the domain name.
When we looked further into the issue, we suspected the local administrator was disabled due to a malware infection. As a result of the infection, they were unable to continue day-to-day operations as usual.
The Resolution: A Complete Malware Scan on the Windows 7 Pro Computer to Add the Domain
Once we discovered the issue, we:
- Started the computer in safe mode with command prompt.
- Ran the command “net user administrator/active: yes”.
- Restarted the computer and logged in as a local administrator.
- Downloaded Malwarebytes and scanned for malware
- Cleaned approximately 500 reported infections.
- Added the domain.
This allowed the client to get back to work and continue day-to-day operations with minimal disruption or downtime!
